Product Description
Over the past decade, the author has met with directors of R&D departments in large industrial firms, who are frustrated by the lack of coherent and consistent methodologies in R&D projects. As a direct result the author was asked to design and present a seminar to provide R&D engineers and scientists a standard methodology for conducting coherent, rigorous, comprehensible, and consistent R&D projects. The author also realized that this training should be included in engineering and science curricula in universities and colleges. To this end, he designed and presented a pilot course for his department that was received enthusiastically by students who participated. This course has now become a required course for all doctoral students in the author's department.

This book has been designed to provide professional engineers, scientists, and students with a consistent and practical framework for the rigorous conduct and communication of complex research and development projects. Although courses and training in research methods are common and generally required of social science professionals, a vast majority of physical scientists and engineers have had no formal classroom training or on-the-job mentoring on proper procedures for research methods. Getting It Right emphasizes the comprehensive analysis of project problems, requirements, and objectives; the use of standard and consistent terminology and procedures; the design of rigorous and reproducible experiments; the appropriate reduction and interpretation of project results; and the effective communication of project design, methods, results, and conclusions.

Presents a standard methodology for conducting coherent, rigorous, comprehensible, and consistent R&D projects
Thoroughly researched to appeal to the needs of R&D engineers and scientists in industry
Will also appeal to students of engineering and science

Reviews

Keep this book handy
I research data mining and machine learning algorithms for a wide variety of applications. Whenever I'm writing a research plan, proposal, or report I keep this book handy as a reference. When I lead projects I use and teach the terminology within the team.

Title says it all
While a great jumping off point for R&D fields, the scientific discipline and structured statistical analysis concepts which this book advocates can be abstracted and applied to a wide variety of complex issues.

Excellent Elaboration of the Scientific Method
For any anyone involved in research. This is an excellent decomposition of the scientific method and its application to formal scientific research. This book is
highly readable and provides a step by step description of how to build and carry out
a research plan through relevant examples and standardized terminology

Not just for grad students
I am a professional computer scientist and systems engineer, and have found this book incredibly useful far outside of its normal role as a textbook for PhD students. This book does not focus on the the "how to do engineering/science" aspects of engineering and technology. Instead it zeros in on the all too rare subject of "what is engineering and science?" This is a very esoteric subject, and Dr. Bock combines scientific rigor, narrative, and some dialog in order to bring this subject down to earth. It discusses the complete scientific method, and how these steps fit into real world projects. It shows actual pitfalls and common mistakes that we practitioners commonly make, and it ties up the entire methodological process into an end to end template for research practices, analytical exploration, and evaluation practices.

I recommend this book not only to grad students and scientists, but to practicing engineers who design and build things that have never been built before.

An excellent resource
This is an excellent and practical guide to the scientific method and its use in R&D. It is a fantastic aid to students conducting doctoral research and full of suggestions for conducting projects large and small in industry. This is a true reference book -- one which belongs on every researcher's shelf.
