Reviews

horrible learning tool
This book is horrible. I am not sure what previous knowledge this book believes you should have but it just throws the material at you like you have already heard of all these technologies and know how they work. The writing style is also bad and hard to focus on. While some old technical books never get old, this one definitely shows its age and is annoying to read about out dated technology. The book also seems to repeat itself many times. Just a terrible book. Look somewhere else for a newer better book.

old but good
I have used this book for several years as a text book. Although it is getting old, it covers the different levels of issues quite well. The students like it. The book has served me well over the years but I have now changed over to Umar's new book (eBusiness and Distributed Systems Handbook) modules middleware, platforms, and architectures. The new material is quite good.

Horrible style and out of date = Useless
I have taught from this book, and it is simply awful. It is several years out of date, and suffers from an almost incomprehensible writing style.

Good Overview of Object-Oriented Client/server Systems
I read this back sometime ago and found it to be a good and quick overview of how three powerful technologies (object-oriented, client/server, Internet) are becoming the foundation for developing future applications.

I re-read the book lately and found that although the book is old (5 years), it still has very relevant material that can be read quickly to get the general idea.

I was also delighted to see that the author has written a new handbook (e-Business and Distributed Systems handbook) that is published as eight modules. These modules provide a very comprehensive view of the topics that are mentioned in this book but are given a new and more in-depth coverage in the handbook.

An overly academic writing style
The concepts are adequately explained with enough mention of real-world applications, but get ready to skim the unbelievable amount of text devoted to referencing other materials. The most annoying thing about this text is the constant references to thousands of other books and articles. It is also one of the most poorly indexed texts I have ever seen; good luck finding what you're looking for.
