Product Description
Discovering Philosophy is a comprehensive introduction to philosophy that is specially designed for readers who are more comfortable with secondary, rather than primary sources. Using more accessible content that is unintimidating yet intellectually engaging, it relates the philosophical issues to readers' own experiences and challenges them to do philosophy on their own. Presents excerpts from primary sources when appropriate, but relies primarily on summaries, explanations, and discussions of the major arguments on the issues involved; teaches readers not so much about what philosophers think, but how to think philosophically themselves; demonstrates that after understanding a philosopher's position we are supposed to react to it, not memorize it; explores the major, traditional areas and topics of philosophy — logic, free will/determinism, ethics, political obligation, the nature of reality, knowledge, the existence of God, the meaning of life.

Reviews

An intriguing yet easy to follow introduction to philosophy.
We read this book for our Introduction to Philosophy class in college. If you are a beginner to philosophy and are at all interested in the ideas of existence, god, etc, you should find this book a fascinating yet easy to follow introduction to the philosophical world. The basic concepts presented challenge you to reexamine the way you think about everything around you. The one thing I found a little lacking was an objective viewpoint on the author's part when presenting you with the philosophical arguments of great thinkers on different sides of an issue. He clearly favors certain arguments and almost seems to present his preferences as fact, though he definitely gets every argument across well even if he doesn't seem to prefer it. Just take the author's personal preferences with a grain of salt and think for yourself, and you'll find this a wonderful, challenging book.
