Book Description
B> While drawing upon traditional, structural and transformational grammatical theory, the primary purpose of this book is to provide sound pedagogical grammar instruction. Taking an eclectic approach, this effective learning tool is designed to support and assist learning about the structure of English. Unlike similar books, Analyzing English Grammar directly addresses its audience with understandable language and clear explanations. From cover to cover, it models the techniques of step-by-step linguistic analysis that the authors teach in their own classes. Numerous exercises help readers move from mastering clear, prototypical cases toward critical analysis of the more complex and borderline fuzzy grammar examples that characterize actual language. Includes the conventions of Standard English in a context of regional, social, and stylistic variation. Grammatical concepts are applied to practical writing problems. For anyone interested in advanced English grammar.

Reviews

Maybe good for english teachers, but not for linguists
I got this book by mistake, when I was enrolling in a fairly intro-level linguistics course at my school. The book I needed was Syntax, by Andrew Carnie. The Carnie text was fascinating, and gave a good enough balance of depth and translations for laymen that I was able to keep up in the class (I'm not a wiz in this subject).

Analyzing English Grammar, on the other hand, barely scratched the surface. I tried to use it as a supplemental study book, for which it proved useless, and I tried to read it for fun, but the large print and shallow treatment of the material left me feeling cheated. You could overview everything covered without actually buying an entire textbook; this one is a waste of space.

It's pricey, too.

Not your traditional grammar
This book is excellent for understanding linguistics and the depth of the English language. If you are looking for a traditional grammar book (prescriptive grammar) this is not for you. This book is descriptive grammar which describes the variations of spoken English language. In addition to showing the traditional Reed-Kellogg form of diagramming it also includes the newer phrase structure trees. I had a hard time understanding this at first but it is becoming more clear. I am a senior in college and this is the textbook we are using in class. It is one to keep if you are going to be an English major or English teacher.

Served Its Purpose
I took this class for a grad school course and tomorrow is the last day. I couldn't be more thrilled about it. Although this class is absolutely boring, the book did refresh my memory on a LOT of stuff I'd forgotten. It wasn't so filled with terminology that you couldn't follow it either. Some of the adverb/adjective examples were unclear though, and constantly debated in class.

um... well, okay
I too purchased this textbook for an upper-level undergrad course at my university. Let's just say I'm thrilled the class is over, and now I'm more than a little neurotic about my grammar.

The instructor presented the material much better than did this text. However, there are charts within the text that condensed the information well.

Perhaps I should have taken the reading assignments more seriously. This text vastly improved my understanding of clauses and the numerous types of verbs.

If you need this book for a class, I wish you the best of luck. Talk to your instructor and ask lots of questions! The book is just supplemental.

Fantastic Book For Understanding English Grammer
I purchased this book for an upper level undergraduate English grammar course and I thought it was fantastic. I went into the class uncertain of the difference between an adjective and an adverb. I came out knowing that and a whole lot more.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a broad understanding of the fundamentals of English grammar. The authors build on the material they cover from chapter to chapter. They provide useful summaries and "rules of thumb" that really help the student organize the information into learnable chunks.
