Product Description
"Ethnic Cleansing" has become one of the key terms of the fin-de-siècle. In the former territory of Yugoslavia, along the fringes of the old Soviet Empire, and in Africa, whole populations are being murdered or forced from lands they have lived on for centuries. Andrew Bell-Fialkoff explains the history of this obscene practice, tracing it from antiquity to the present and showing how, in different times and places, the most varied criteria have been used to isolate and destroy previously accepted or even completely unnoticed groups. "Cleansing" has been based on race, gender, class, sexual preference, and religion and has been a constant evil in world history. The need to understand its reemergence in the wake of communism's collapse is at the center of this important book.

Reviews

A Muslim point of View mostly
Ethnic cleansing surely has existed throughout huma history except before 1992 it was called 'genocide' or it was called 'war'. The Balkan wars gave the world this term but even then it was already used polticially and this book pereptuates this problem. When Serbs were completely ethnically cleansed from Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia, it was not called by that name, but when Bosnians were ethnically cleansed then suddenly it got press. This book mostly pretends that only Muslims get ethnically cleansed: Karabagh, Bosnia, Chechnya, Kosovo, Cyrpus, Palestinians and Sri Lanka all deal with Muslims. But there is no coverage of Sudan or in southern Thailand or the historical destruction of the Armenians of Turkey and the Sikhs of Pakistan or the Assyrians or Iraq. This book is biased and wrong. There is no discussion of the Americas(such as Guatemala) or East Asia such as East Timor or the Chinese in Indonesia. Ulster, Transylvania and Rwanda serve as the token non-Muslim places. But what about Congo, or Zimbabwe or many other places where ethnic cleansing has been common.

The author seems to not be sufficiently knowledgable about the subject or the history of the conflicts and there is not one place where the history is unbiased and not from a purely Islamic point of view.

Comparative history as it should be written
This controversial, well researched, and brilliantly written book addresses a challenging topic, ethnic cleansing. The author tells the story of cleansing from the earliest days to the present and elucidates the root causes of cleansing. Is it ever justified? It is a stunning book in its scope and the courage of its approach. No wonder it provoked howls of outrage from the politically correct and mentally retarded. The book will remain a challenge for a long time to come.

A pleasant surprise
This is still the most important book on the subject. The author starts with Assyrians and ends in our time. He shows that although the term may have been invented in contemporary Yugoslavia, the practice of cleansing goes back to the earliest times in history. It is an interesting, important and, occasionally, infuriating book. But it is never dull. I think it's great.

This book should be culturally cleansed!
I picked up this book in hopes that I would better acquiant myself with the conflicts in our world. This book focuses on 10 hot spots in the world: Bosnia, Cyprus, Karabakh, Kosovo, Palestine, the former USSR, Rwanda & Burundi, Sri Lanka, Transylvania, and Ulster (Northern Ireland). The author tries to give a brief historical background (in many cases an extremely biased and uneducated view) on these regions and then tries to come up with his own solution to these problems ranging anywhere from the partition of land to population exchanges (thank goodness this guy doesn't run the UN!). My advice to everyone out there...spend your money on a better read!
