Product Description This study of Babeuf as a political thinker, based on an analysis of his extensive writings, and on scholarship unavailable in English, shows him to be a major precursor of the modern revolutionary socialist tradition. The first part traces Babeuf's political evolution in the context of the French Revolution; the second examines his changing reputation among subsequent historians. The final section assesses the originality of his thought, showing him to be neither a Jacobin nor a Utopian.

The Grandfather of Communism When a number of people believed the revolutionary leaders had gone too far, Babeuf and his comrades believed they hadn't gone far enough. They belived social equality could never truly be acheived unless there was economic equality. The book is divided into three parts - the events leading up to and the "conspiracy" itself, how future socialists used their own political biases to create a babeuf that served their interests, and what babuef's belief were in his own words. An excellent book that sheds light on a forgotten piece of history. Good info on Babuef is hard to get outside France so I highly recommend you get your hands on this book.
