Book Description As a new manager you face a daunting task. Until now your job performance has depended mostly on what you've doneāand you must have done it pretty well, or you wouldn't have been promoted. Now, a new challenge awaits you: figuring out how to get work done through other people. It also dawns on you that from now on you will be judged by how well they do their jobs. The New Manager's Survival Manual was written precisely for you and your new situation. It guides you through the stresses and uncertainties of that first year and helps you emerge as an effective and successful first-level manager. Practical, concise, and easy to understand, The New Manager's Survival Manual breaks down the job of being a manager into its component skills, helps you identify areas you need to work on, and shows you how to acquire the skills to deal with any situation you may encounter. Through instructive stories, dialogues, and examples, the Manual helps build your skills in structuring work; selecting, guiding, correcting, and motivating workers; supporting their efforts; delegating authority and responsibility; and communicating effectively. This new edition expands its coverage of "self-managing teams" with the latest ideas on developing successful teams and understanding what types of teams work best in the new organizational environments of the 1990s. The final chapters introduce you to the concept of "Phase Two Management," those higher-level functions that are of the greatest benefit to your boss and your organization. Using the skills maximization model, The New Manager's Survival Manual strengthens you in the various skill areas through periodic "StretchMeters," self-tests that help you accurately evaluate your mastery of a particular skill, and "ASAP" sections that prescribe specific actions you can take to develop key managerial abilities. Packed with solid, practical advice, The New Manager's Survival Manual will put you on the road to successful management: Your employees will be productive, your boss will be happy, and you will again be promotable. Are you a new manager who needs concise, reliable tips on how to do your job and do it well? The New Manager's Survival Manual has those tips. Great for new managers! Although the format is a little cheesy (with the lessons presented as dialog between managers), the content, structure and organization of the book is great for new managers. The examples are fairly realistic, and the breakdown of basic skills is appropriate for those new to supervising workers.
A "First Aid Kit" for the new manager Helped the first time I opened the cover. Gave me a check list of items to consider, cut my response time to write the report and made it fairly painless. I could have thought it all out on my own, but I would have taken much longer to get to the same place. It sits in my drawer like a personal mentor, gives me a little directional steering to cover all the issues.
