We're drowning in a glut of information--how can we organize it all and present it in meaningful ways? Information Storage and Retrieval explores every facet of this complex problem facing programmers and system designers. Robert Korfhage addresses different components of the problem; for example, in addressing querying, he explores not just the familiar Boolean-logic queries but also vector queries, weighted queries, fuzzy queries, and probabilistic queries. The book also discusses techniques for determining the similarity of two documents, methods for incorporating user profiles into queries, and nontraditional ways of presenting query results. And, importantly, Korfhage includes measures for rating the effectiveness of information retrieval systems. While Information Storage and Retrieval won't necessarily tell you what solution will best suit your needs, it offers a useful survey of the numerous options so you can decide which are most appropriate for further consideration.

Product Description
The way information is stored, retrieved and displayed is changing. Simple bibliographic databases are giving way to unregulated and unorganized multimedia data repositories, which can give the user great difficulty when searching for information. A methodology is needed to keep all of this information in its various forms retrievable. This is the first modern survey of the field of information storage and retrieval to discuss how to work with information in all its varying forms. It shows information professionals how to handle full-text, graphics, video and audio, and how to distribute these massive databases over networks.

Reviews

Good book
Good book. Clear and concise.

Weak on Content for the Price
I recently purchased 3 books on this subject. This was the most expensive yet the weakest in terms of content. Korfhage does a good job of summarizing the field but provides only an overview of each issue. With a large type format, this book does not provide a lot of information. The references at the end of each chapter are extensive, however.

This would be a 5 star book at half the price, but the steep price tag is not justified for what one actually gets. I was feel somewhat misled by the preceding 100% 5-star rating this book received.

Excellent overview and well referenced
Korfhage does an excellent job covering a wide variety of storage and retrieval methods, providing the reader a well balanced overview of the field. The extensive references at the end of each chapter make further research very easy, however, most chapters are quite technical and will satisfy many readers' needs. The only shortcommings were the lack of case studies and somewhat brief coverage of internet search engines, relatively minor gripes for such a broad-ranging book.

An excellent choice!
A must have for everyone who wants to learn about information retrieval. It starts from the beggining and explains everything in a very comprehensive way.
