The men of the Confederacy Most certainly, John L. Wakelyn's "Biographical Dictionary of the Confederacy" is the essential reference book on the Confederate establishment. Except for specific biographies, the general books tended to emphasize battles and campaigns and to leave personal date of Confederate leaders in the dark. According to historian Frank E. Vandiver, Wakelyn's book "is a remarkably useful historical tool - a biographical directory that is also and analytical dictionary of attitudes, occupations, and power structures."
