Good review, not perfect This review book is pretty good, but it has some flaws. (Do not use this as your only studying resource!) First Aid for Step 1 was a little bit better than this book in terms of formatting and being concise. This has a lot more long lines/paragraphs of text with very few tips/mnemonics. That being said, it lays out most of the relevant and important information you'll need to know in order to get a decent grade (but also omits stuff that you might need to look elsewhere if you want a top grade).
best book for the psychiatry clerkship! you get a good overview of all the main syndromes for your clerkship. it's not intensely in-depth but what you need to know, and you can supplement with other texts like the lange questions book for the shelf.
Honors? yes please. Concise, cheap, gets you an honors on the NBME. Need I say more? Read this 3x. Do the Lange Q&A book 1x. Do Psych USMLE questions 1x. BAM! honors. love the book. recommend it to all third years hoping to get through psych blissfully. Good luck everybody!
Great resource for the shelf exam First Aid presents the basics of psychiatry in a way that is organized and quick and easy to read. The small size of the book did concern me a bit at first, but it appears to summarize most everything you need to know for a solid performance on the shelf exam. The chapters range from about 4-12+ pages, and they keep all psychiatric conditions grouped together into DSM categories (eating disorders, anxiety disorders, etc). The pharmacology section is brief, but it points out the unique characteristics of each psych drug and drug class, which is essentially all you need to know for the shelf exam. I would say the major weakness of the book is the lack of focus on general medical conditions and common medications that may cause psych symptoms. This information was typically represented in a list, without much emphasis (and so I didn't really study it much), but I found several questions related to this material on my shelf exam. It was my weakest section on the test, but I was still able to score in the 90s using only First Aid x3 and supplementing with Lange Q&A x1. If you have no interest in entering psychiatry, I believe First Aid (plus your question book of choice) is enough for the clerkship. This book allowed me to learn the basics of psych and perform well on the shelf, but it did not go into so much detail that I felt I was wasting my time learning information that only students entering psych would really care about.
Sure way to an "A" This is an amazing book! There are few books that you can get for clerkships that are as perfect as this one. It gives the exact information that you need to know for the shelf examination. Know this book well, and you have a sure fire shot of getting an "A" on the shelf examination. The book is thin and very easy to go through. If you have used other First Aid books, this one is written exactly the same. It includes information in a bullet pointed format with smaller high-yield facts in the margins. There is plenty of margin room for taking notes, and it comes with a few cards that you can put in your pocket to help you recall really important details. In all honesty, I felt like this is by far the easiest way to learn psych and score big on the shelf exam! Even without vignettes and questions, this book deserves 5 stars.
