Sensitive report of a church in turbulent water This sensitive report traces recent trends in Russia's churches -- the popular resurgence of religious life in the 1990s, the growing influence of women, or rising debates between progressive and virtually xenophobic believers. As in North America, some church leaders insist that only a revived Christian state can avert a future of moral depravity. Ellis cites a committee of Russian clerics: "The debasing of Russian history, the humiliating of Russian culture and self-awareness are carried on today as before, and cosmopolitanism and ethno-nihilism are openly propagated. Again and again we observe, in addition to the catastrophic material situation of the Russian people, moral degeneration, absolute legal nihilism, and the further disintegration of spirituality ... Where is the way out of this situation? We must find the way out by means of restoring Russian national consciousness and Orthodoxy." (p. 106-107) --author of "Different Visions of Love" | ||
