Product Description "Discipline is a subject about which the Scriptures say much—but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent. Kent Hughes fills a gaping void with this superb volume.… If there is a spark of spiritual desire in your soul, this book will surely kindle it into a blazing passion for godly discipline." —John MacArthur, pastor and best-selling author "This is a book for men who are eager to learn how to be more effective. It comes from the pen of one who has learned to serve as he has led and who is able to provide the reader with many practical applications of eternal truth." —C. William Pollard, Chairman and CEO, The ServiceMaster Company "To open this book and find someone taking seriously the biblical call of‘agonizing to enter the kingdom’ and… boxing and sweating like a champion to get victory over sin is the most refreshing thing I could have set my eyes on." —John Piper, pastor and popular author "An outstanding volume for men and women alike!… Over 250 pages devoted to the practical outworking of discipline on subjects like purity, marriage, prayer, the tongue, the mind, our work, leadership, ministry, and many, many more. Every man should read this book!! This book is a must, along with the Bible of course, for every man to read. It is very revealing in the fact that men fall short of the glory of God every day in everything that we do. But is also helps us in showing there is hope and that if we follow Jesus and His direction we will have glorifies Him. If you are a follower of Christ, then you should read this book as it helps guide us in the direction, through things in life that steers us awauy from God, such as lust, ungodly acts, our selfishness, and many others that we think we are "o.k." on. Great book!!
Men... It's Time to Get in Shape R. Kent Hughes' book Disciplines of a Godly Man is a passionate plea for men to embrace a disciplined life of intentional discipleship. Many men's books line the shelves of the Christian bookstore, each one encouraging men to grow in Christ. This is the best one that I've come across, as it grounds the disciplines in biblical theology. Hughes divides the disciplines into four sections: Relationships, Soul, Character and Ministry. Within each section are several disciplines that Scripture calls men to cultivate. Disciplines for a Godly Man would be great as a small-group study or as a curriculum for men's ministries. Each chapter contains a section at the end with insightful questions, application and additional Scripture readings. One thing I enjoyed immensely... The appendix includes a Personal Reading Survey, in which Hughes lists the top reading choices from a variety of evangelical leaders. This survey is by itself worth the price of the book.
COMPREHENSIVE This book deals with man as a whole and addresses the disciplines independently for a comprehensive understanding of the issues that really matter to God. In a search for what this life is all about, the Christian disciple will find the`meat'to digest and carry out what he has been called to do in the Body of Christ. The use of excerpts, quotes and other material well assisted Hughes in covering a genre of topics that should be at the forefront Christian thinking. The reading list from many Christians leaders is a great resource for additional subject matter.
If you want to change read... Pretty hard core. Hit's a lot of stuff in a short book. Can you change your whole life in 1 month? (or however long it takes you to read a book)
Great intro for being a godly man! This book hits on so many facets of living the godly life that it amazes me. Every chapter hits on something that all men have as weaknesses in some way and challenges to break out of the weakness by giving advice as well. More importantly, the book is biblically based, which is always good. Overall, a very exhorting book!
