Excellent for beginners This book is excellent for beginners (or at least seems so to this beginner). It explains how the various products in each medium interact with each other - information that would have taken me years to figure out on my own (if I didn't lose interest before then). It explains how to mix colors (avoiding mud). It is a good primer on color theory and the basics of composition. Best of all, it's an easy read with lots of illustrated/photographed examples. It covers watercolors, acrylics and oils, colored pencil, pastels, etc. It also talks about the different surfaces, mediums and varnishes you can use to enhance or protect your work. It has step-by-step instructions on various techniques, from loading your brush to using masks. I borrowed this book from the library, but I may purchase it as a reference book.
