Product Description
Given that I am rather skeptical of the very possibility of a scientific survey of apostates, it is rather difficult for me to make any psychological, sociological, or anthropological generalizations based on fewer than fifty personal testimonies that would be valid outside this particular group. No quick portrait of the typical apostate is likely to appear--some are young (students in their teens), some are middle-aged with children; some are scientists, while others are economists, businesspeople, or journalists; some are from Bangladesh, others are from Pakistan, India, Morocco, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, or Iran. Our witnesses, nonetheless, do have certain moral and intellectual qualities in common: for instance, they are all comparatively well educated, computer literate with access to the Internet, and rational, with the ability to think for themselves. However, what is most striking is their fearlessness, their moral courage, and their moral commitment to telling the truth. They all face social ostracism, the loss of friends and family, a deep inner spiritual anguish and loneliness--and occasionally the death penalty if discovered. Their decisions are not frivolously taken, but the ineluctable result of rational thinking.

There are very useful analogies to be drawn between communism and Islam. . . .As Arthur Koestler said, "You hate our Cassandra cries and resent us as allies, but when all is said, we ex-Communists are the only people on your side who know what it's all about."

Communism has been defeated, at least for the moment; Islamism has not, and unless a reformed, tolerant, liberal kind of Islam emerges soon, perhaps the final battle will be between Islam and Western democracy. And these former Muslims, to echo Koestler's words, on the side of Western democracy are the only ones who know what it's all about, and we would do well to listen to their Cassandra cries. -- Ibn Warraq, from the Introduction

Reviews

Please Ban This Book
Kindly please Ban this Book as it touches negative religious sentiments as it portrays the wrong way of Islam and religions close to Islam like Christianity and Judaism that have close but not exact creeds.

A very poor understanding of Islam
First of all, the author Ibn Warraq chose this nickname just to sound like a former Muslim scholar. I have no idea if he claimed to be a scholar, but his name indicates that for every Arabic speaker.

In addition, his claims in this book (as well in his other books) are all copied from earlier books written by western critics who their main job were to make Muslims convert to Christianity in order to make them accept the western conquest of Muslims countries.

Finally, the claims in his books are generally incorrect. He used to put some of the truth and mix it with his poor understanding, then the final product printed as books.

Islam Is Organized Crime Aspiring to Homosexuality
The editor of this book is NOT a Western apologist for Islam or its nonsense and brutality. Islam is a religion based on the teachings of a pedophile, rapist, and intolerant serial mass murderer.

This book reveals subtly that Islam really is nothing more than a huge organized crime ring aspiring to homosexuality. Islam, given its obsession with tribute payments, property aquisition and distribution rules, gender bias, enslavement, rape, and use of mob-style violence to foment compliance (even by persons who are not Muslim pigs) is nothing more than an unrestrained, international organized crime syndicate. Islam also is a religion aspiring to homosexuality.

Unlike most books about Islam, which ignore or trivialize important facts, this book confronts facts and their religious significance. The sun sets somewhere in a pond. Yeah, right, Muslim idiots! Article number 19, "A Rationalist Look at Islam," is one of the best, I think.

Readers are likely to apprehend the real Islam and Muslims by reading this book and by reading, "Why I Am Not a Muslim."

Very Good
A fascinating insight into the thinking processes, and in some cases agonies, folks went through in reviewing their faith in Islam and the journey of choosing their own path. Also gave a much clearer insight into some of the emphases withion the teachings of Islam.

Banned in Elkton, Maryland, USA.
I was so impressed with the information in this book that I donated a new copy to the Elkton, Maryland, library, where others could read about what it tells about intolerance. Apparently, the book did not fit in with the mostly amiable accounts of Islam therein, so that it wound up in the next Friends of the Library sale.
